When to Visit Maui for the Best Weather

By Hawaii Vacations PackageFebruary 28, 2025

One of the most common questions we hear from travelers is: "When is the best time to visit Maui?" The good news is that Maui enjoys beautiful weather year-round, with average temperatures hovering between 75°F and 85°F. But "good" and "perfect" aren't the same thing — and the month you choose can significantly impact your experience, your budget, and the activities available to you.

After years of helping thousands of travelers plan their Maui vacations, we've put together this comprehensive guide to help you choose the ideal time for your trip.

Maui's Two Seasons: Dry Season vs. Wet Season

Unlike the mainland's four distinct seasons, Hawaii operates on two: the dry season (kau) from April through October, and the wet season (hooilo) from November through March. But don't let the names scare you — Maui's "wet season" is nothing like a monsoon. Rain typically comes in brief, passing showers, often at higher elevations, and the coast remains mostly sunny even during the wettest months.

That said, the dry season is objectively more consistently sunny, with less humidity and calmer ocean conditions. If you want to guarantee the best possible beach weather, the dry season is your safest bet.

Month-by-Month Maui Weather Guide

January & February — Whale Season at Its Peak

Average highs: 80°F | Ocean temp: 75°F | Rainfall: Moderate to heavy at elevation

January and February are the heart of Maui's whale watching season. Thousands of humpback whales migrate to the warm waters between Maui and Lanai to breed and give birth, and you can often spot them right from the beach. The weather is warm but you'll see more rain showers, especially on the north and east (windward) sides of the island. South and west Maui (Wailea, Kihei, Ka'anapali) remain relatively dry and sunny.

This is peak tourist season, so expect higher prices and busier beaches. Book resorts and activities well in advance.

March & April — Shoulder Season Sweet Spot

Average highs: 81°F | Ocean temp: 76°F | Rainfall: Decreasing

March and April mark the transition from wet to dry season, and they're some of the best months to visit Maui. The rain tapers off, temperatures start climbing, and whale watching is still excellent through mid-April. Crowds begin to thin after spring break, and resort prices start dropping. This is our top recommendation for travelers who want great weather without peak-season pricing.

May & June — Perfect Weather, Fewer Crowds

Average highs: 84°F | Ocean temp: 77°F | Rainfall: Very low

May and June are arguably Maui's best-kept secret. The weather is near-perfect — sunny skies, low humidity, warm ocean temperatures, and calm waters ideal for snorkeling and paddleboarding. Tourism drops significantly after Memorial Day weekend, meaning shorter lines, easier restaurant reservations, and lower prices across the board. If we could only visit Maui once a year, we'd choose late May or early June.

July & August — Summer Peak Season

Average highs: 86°F | Ocean temp: 79°F | Rainfall: Very low

Summer brings Maui's warmest temperatures and driest conditions. The trade winds keep things comfortable even on the hottest days. This is family peak season, so beaches like Ka'anapali and Big Beach can get crowded, and resort prices spike. The water is warm and inviting, perfect for swimming and snorkeling. If you're considering other Hawaiian islands, the Big Island and Oahu offer equally stunning summer conditions. South swells can bring larger waves to south-facing beaches, creating great conditions for experienced surfers.

September & October — The Best Value Months

Average highs: 85°F | Ocean temp: 80°F | Rainfall: Low

September and October are Maui's true hidden gems. The weather remains excellent, ocean temperatures peak at their warmest, and tourism drops to its annual low. This means the best deals on resorts, flights, and rental cars. The only trade-off? A slightly higher chance of brief afternoon showers as the wet season approaches, and hurricane season (though actual hurricanes hitting Maui are extremely rare). For budget-conscious travelers who still want premium weather, this is the window.

November & December — Holiday Magic

Average highs: 82°F | Ocean temp: 77°F | Rainfall: Increasing

November starts quiet and affordable, then ramps up quickly toward the holiday season. Early November offers solid weather and low prices, making it a great option for couples and off-peak travelers. By mid-December, Maui is bustling with holiday visitors, and prices peak. Whale season begins in late November, adding another reason to visit. The north shore starts seeing bigger winter swells, attracting surfers from around the world.

Best Time for Specific Activities

  • Whale watching: December through April (peak in February)
  • Snorkeling & diving: May through September (calmest, clearest water)
  • Surfing: November through March (biggest swells on north shore)
  • Hiking the Road to Hana: April through October (less rain, safer roads)
  • Haleakala sunrise: Year-round (but clearest skies in dry season)
  • Budget travel: September through early November
  • Honeymoons & romance: May, June, or September for weather + value — see our couples travel guide

South & West Maui vs. North & East Maui

One crucial detail many visitors overlook: Maui has dramatically different microclimates depending on which side of the island you're on. The south and west shores (Wailea, Kihei, Ka'anapali, Lahaina) sit in the rain shadow of Haleakala and are significantly drier and sunnier year-round. The north and east shores (Haiku, Paia, Hana) receive much more rainfall, which is what creates those lush, tropical landscapes and waterfalls.

If sunny beach weather is your top priority, stay on the south or west side. If you want that dramatic rainforest scenery, plan day trips to the north and east.

Our Recommendation

For most travelers, the sweet spot is late April through June or September through mid-November. You'll get excellent weather, thinner crowds, and significantly better prices than peak season. If whale watching is a priority, aim for February through mid-April — you'll catch the tail end of whale season while the weather is improving.

No matter when you visit, Maui will take your breath away. But choosing the right month can be the difference between a great vacation and an absolutely perfect one. Speak with a specialist to start planning your ideal Maui trip.
